Target Audience

This program is designed to meet the educational needs of pharmacists
and other health care professionals, including pharmacy directors and medical
directors, who are involved in the care of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Program Description

This program will examine the current and evolving treatment strategies for T2DM through presentation and discussion of emerging evidence. In recent years, incretin-based therapies with their unique pathophysiologic targets, have rapidly evolved into an integral part of the diabetes management regimen by helping to improve goal achievement. We will explore novel concepts with the oral incretin-based therapies and the unique challenges today's pharmacists face when tailoring a therapeutic regimen to their patient's needs. We will help clinicians identify barriers to goal achievement, including issues of patient adherence and their effect on T2DM outcomes. The program will utilize case studies to apply the key concepts and create an understanding of incretin-based therapy and its clinical effectiveness and place in T2DM.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity participants will be better able to:

  1. Discuss the physiologic effects and relevant pharmacology of current and in-development DPP-4 inhibitors
  2. Evaluate the potential clinical impact of oral incretin agents, integrating considerations of therapeutic efficacy and place in therapy
  3. Identify barriers to goal achievement, including issues of patient adherence and their effect on T2DM outcomes
  4. Design an individualized pharmaceutical care plan utilizing a comprehensive approach to achieve optimal patient outcomes
